2005 Projects --
Checkbook Project | Stock Market Simulation | Incan, Aztec, and Mayan Social Studies Projects

Checkbook Project --- Spring 2005
All sixth grade students are learning about checks and balances. Each student has received a checkbook and must keep good records of their account. Students experience real life situations just as adults do. All students receive a paycheck every week for doing their job. (coming to school and learning) They have penalties for not keeping an accurate account. They have to write checks sometimes. Their checkbook can be stolen by the thief if left unattended (Mr.Choinski). Students also make payments and receive deposits for a number of items. Ask your child to share the checkbook system with you.

At the end of the checkbook system (approx. the end of March) students will be using the money they have earned for a raffle. Every year I ask the parents to help us out in donating to the raffle. However, I do not expect any parents or students to spend ANY money to go out and buy something to donate. If that is something you wish to do, you may, but the majority of our raffle donations come from businesses. We ask that parents go to their workplace and ask if there is anything the company would be willing to donate to the raffle. Many time companies will donate t-shirts, pens, water bottles, etc. for free because it is a way of free advertising for them. Some parents in the past have worked at a potato chip plant and the company donated chips for free. Another worked for radio shack and the company donated 3 cd walkman's and some radios. Last year over 200 items were donated to the raffle, and 85% of the items came free from a company donation. So we are asking parents to please ask your place of employment if they have anything to donate for kids. I must stress again that we are not asking anyone to spend any money. If your place of business cannot donate anything, that is ok. Please do not feel obligated to donate. But, the more parents who ask, the better our raffle can be for the students. All items donated must be brand new. Feel free to contact Mr. Choinski at school if you have a question about the raffle. Once you have a donation, you may send it with your child at any time to school and Mr. Choinski will keep it secure. Thank you for your help.

Sixth Graders Tops in Stock Market Simulation --- 2004-5
Three Tipler 6th grade stock market teams in the East Central Division have finished in the top three positions in the 2004 Fall Wisconsin Stock Market Simulation sponsored by Economics Wisconsin. There were sixty-eight teams that participated in the East Central, ten-week competition. Each team was given a hypothetical $100,000 to invest in the stock market at the beginning of the simulation. The top ten teams based on their equity in their stock portfolios at the end of the ten weeks were:

1. Tipler (5th period SS) $ 127,475
2. Tipler (7th period SS) $ 126,791
3. Tipler (2nd period SS) $ 121,171
4. Lac du Flambeau $ 120,247
5. Prairie River $ 118,884
6. Lac du Flambeau $ 118,774
7. Lac du Flambeau $ 118,773
8. Lac du Flambeau $ 117,773
9. Lac du Flambeau $ 117,119

1st period SS: 31st $ 104,883
4th period SS: 12th $ 114,274
4th period SS: 16th $ 112,098

Team advisors were Tim Olson, Deb Schall, and Suzie Keefe. The top three teams in each division receive certificates for each student, advisor and school; T-shirts; and recognition at the regional awards banquet. First place also receives $100, second place $50, and third place $25. Tipler sixth graders have been competing in the Wisconsin Stock Market Simulation since 1991. This is the first year that a Tipler team has ever placed in one of the top three spots, much less all three. In fact, this is the first year that a Tipler team, 5th period SS, has ever reached the top 50 teams in the state which includes all high school teams. The 5th period Tipler team finished 46th in the state out of 500 or more teams. During the ten-week contest they reached as high as 19th place. The top team in the state wins a trip to New York City to visit the New York Stock Exchange. East Troy High School won first place this year. How have the best Tipler teams performed in the past? Take a look:
